Taking a cue from X, Threads tests AI-powered summaries of trending topics

Meta’s app Threads, often called the “Twitter alternative,” is constantly working on feature advancements to keep itself at a viable spot in the social media axis. Meta’s Instagram chief, Adam Mosseri, revealed that it is now piloting AI-generated summaries of trending topics in the “Trending Now” section for users in the United States. The idea is similar to X’s Stories, wherein AI chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk, sums up trending conversations.

Threads is also launching an expanded selection of trending topics. Users will soon be able to search posts within specified date ranges and find content from individual accounts. Mosseri described these updates as improvements to the platform’s Search and Trending Now functionality.

These updates come as Threads faces increasing competition from Bluesky, the rapidly growing alternative to X, which has recently reached 20 million users. Many have deserted X, citing issues with changing content policies and Elon Musk’s promotion of certain politicians, for instance. In response, Threads has begun looking to surface more content from accounts that users follow, just one of the complaints leveled against its algorithm.

The application also introduced custom feeds, allowing users to curate content streams based on particular topics or profiles. This is seen as a direct competitor to Bluesky’s customized algorithms and feeds offering similar freedoms.

Although Bluesky is gaining fast, it still has fewer users than Threads, which has monthly active users exceeding 275 million. According to market intelligence firm Similarweb, the number of daily active users on Bluesky is closing in, and at this rate, the company may be a strong competitor one day.
