YouTube has released a new update to its Dream Screen feature for Shorts, enabling users to generate AI video backgrounds. For a long time, Dream Screen relied on supporting just image backgrounds. Still, with Google DeepMind’s AI video-generation model, Veo, in play, users can now generate video clips in cinematic formats with resolutions up to 1080p. This feature allows creators to turn words of inspiration, such as “candy landscape” or “magical forest with a stream” into one-of-a-kind video backgrounds. Users open the Shorts camera, click the “green screen” icon, choose “Dream Screen” enter a prompt, select an animation style, and then click “Create.” The tool will generate a few video background options that can be used while recording.

This feature is intended to assist creators in bringing their ideas to life, whether by putting themselves into a scene inspired by a favorite story or designing animated intros for their Shorts. YouTube has also announced plans to extend the functionality to allow creators to generate six-second stand-alone video clips for Shorts.

This new tool currently gives YouTube an upper hand over TikTok, which supports AI-powered background images but does not offer video background creation. Dream Screen is now available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, giving creators an innovative way of making their content stand out more.
