WhatsApp has announced voice messages with text transcription, a new feature designed to increase communication convenience. The new functionality will be rolled out to users worldwide on Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks. Voice messages posted in Messenger will be automatically transcribed into text, thus solving situations where it won’t be possible to listen to the audio, such as noisy spaces or while traveling.

This version introduces voice message recording and adds messaging, so one gets the best of both worlds for convenience. The transcriptions will thus be only viewable to recipients who have installed the feature on their devices. Care was taken to ensure that privacy is carefully thought through since the transcriptions are processed directly on the user’s device. WhatsApp assures users that no one else, including the platform itself, can access or read their messages.

The availability of Languages will vary with the operating system. Android users will start with English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi support; in contrast, iOS users will have access to a far longer list of languages, as available on WhatsApp’s support page. In the months ahead, the messaging platform will add more languages to its support; hence, it will offer the feature to most users across the globe.
