Instagram takes on Snapchat with new location-sharing feature

This means the photo-sharing platform now includes live location sharing directly into Instagram’s direct message capabilities, as reported by Facebook, for competing with service giants Apple’s Find My and Snapchat’s Snap Map in its real-time map share offerings. However, in this case, compared to all of its major competitors, Instagram only supports the capability for one hour live sharing, which becomes beneficial during meetups, such as finding friends among many individuals in a small place.

Users can share their location with one person or a group chat. In this way, only the participants in the specific chat will be able to view the location. The location cannot be forwarded to other chats, so privacy is ensured. The users are reminded of the active live location by a visible indicator in the chat, and sharing stops automatically after the one-hour limit.

This feature is similar to what already exists in WhatsApp, which is another Meta-owned service where users can share their live locations for up to eight hours. Instagram’s time frame is shorter, but it might expand it in the future. This feature is available only in certain countries, but Meta did not say anything about the release date.

The Instagram feature of assigning nicknames within direct messages allows the users a personalized way to be in touch. Tapping the chat name at the top of a conversation and tapping “Nicknames” allows the user to assign custom names that only show up within that specific chat. It could be fun or just to avoid typing out long usernames.
