The “Find My” feature now can share items’ locations with people and third-party services such as airlines. From its AirTags, travellers may now forward to airlines the exact locations of a missing piece of luggage, which is easy to track.

According to Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Apple service, the new feature has proved indispensable for customers moving around, mainly providing necessary location information whenever their bags are lost or mishandled. Introducing the feature “Share Item Location,” Apple will now ease the ability to share it with airlines while protecting the privacy of its clients.

Currently, it is possible to use this feature with the beta version of iOS, and very soon, this should be rolled out for new iPhone models. In the next few months, over 15 major airlines will add this capability to enable passengers to view locations of shared items and far better assist within that time frame, including Delta and United.

It will dovetail well with new rules promulgated by the Transportation Department that force airlines to refund fees for delayed or lost checked luggage. With all their speed, air carriers will be in an excellent position to spring into action and find the missing bags quickly, maybe even before the customer needs to claim expensive refunds. Resolution happens faster for travellers, and any disruption is minimal.
