OpenAI is about to undergo some significant changes. The company, at the center of the AI revolution since 2022, will reportedly consider going through an entirely new form of a publicly benefit corporation. This follows after the Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and two other high-level executives quit. The departure, however, is not tied up with the company’s restructuring, according to the CEO, Sam Altman.

What Is OpenAI Changing about?
OpenAI was founded 2015 as a nonprofit but launched a for-profit subsidiary in 2019 with Microsoft as its lead investor. Now, the San Francisco AI leader is exploring converting the wholly owned for-profit arm into a PBC, which would exempt profit restrictions on investors, enabling more capital infusion, according to terms it outlined in raising $6.5 billion of new financing. OpenAI has incurred enormous development costs and might incur losses of up to $5 billion this year; therefore, the need for more investment is highly urgent.

As such, becoming a PBC is an essential transition for OpenAI. It will help the company achieve maximum profits while holding its commitments regarding public benefit accountable. However, some believe that the rapid pace of growth of AI, more so towards AGI, is dangerous if it comes about unchecked. AGI refers to a system whose intelligence overshoots that of humans- a development for which OpenAI has been aggressively canvassing. Critics believe this pursuit without warranted safeguards may result in ‘uncontrollable’ AI systems.
Despite all these warnings, OpenAI claims safety is its highest concern and just recently announced the initiation of an independent safety and security committee. Some former employees and AI experts question whether OpenAI can fully manage the risks that arise with its rapid AI development.

Why Have So Many Executives Left OpenAI?
The latest is Mira Murati, who left as the chief technology officer. Last year, OpenAI entered a contentious period when the nonprofit board briefly sacked its CEO, Sam Altman, after it got cold feet. Some other top executives include the cofounder and chief scientist of OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever, and Greg Brockman, the company’s president, who is on a sabbatical. According to Altman, they were not because of restructuring but personal decisions regarding their future careers.
