Huawei AI chips are taking another step forward as Chinese firms look for alternatives to Nvidia

Huawei Technologies is pushing forward in its AI chip, with the latest Ascend 910C chip now under test with major Chinese clients. This is one of the significant steps in China’s push towards making itself more independent on semiconductors, even as Huawei forges ahead and is still reeling from US sanctions.

According to sources, Huawei has already supplied samples of its Ascend 910C to many of China’s leading server and internet companies that have, up until now, relied heavily on Nvidia. According to Huawei, the Ascend 910C is a high-performance, energy-efficient chip that challenges the performance efficiency of Nvidia’s B20 and H100 chips.

Huawei states that an earlier version, Ascend 910B, has been outperforming Nvidia’s A100 by 20%, which could make their AI chips a viable option for all of China’s industries. After the US export ban on advanced Nvidia GPUs, Huawei’s Ascend solutions have filled the gaping hole in the market. Technology from the Chinese giant powered nearly half of China’s top large language models at the end of last year, illustrating its growing role in the AI industry.

This, combined with the deepening restrictions on foreign chips, is all the more reason why its computing systems should enable the broader domestic AI infrastructure, said CEO Ren and CTO Xu, pointing to storage and communication between centralised systems and edge devices as critical areas for improving performance.

Surprisingly, the US sanctions targeting Huawei’s acquisition of technological advancements have pushed this firm to innovative developments in AI chipsets, computing power, and self-contained semiconductor solutions. With a few of the production issues that Huawei might face, the firm has shown remarkable resilience by developing chips and hardware in the primary absence of US components.
