Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati is reportedly fundraising for a new AI startup

Mira Murati, former Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, has set out to raise more than $100m in venture capital to seed her new AI startup, where she is said to focus on developing proprietary models applied in AI products.

After announcing her resignation on X—formerly Twitter—Murati stated that OpenAI has made great strides in terms of how systems learn and solve complex challenges. She mentioned she was clearing space for personal explorations and would not say anything else about what’s next.

Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 as VP of Applied AI and Partnerships and was promoted to CTO in 2022. She has also, at times, been interim CEO, briefly taking over the reins after co-founder and CEO Sam Altman temporarily left the company. She previously held positions at Tesla and Leap Motion.

The exit is part of a recent spate of top-level departures at OpenAI. In recent weeks, this included the departure of the company’s chief research officer and research VP, who quit shortly after she did. A week after these changes, OpenAI sealed a record $6.6 billion in a historic venture capital round.
