Amazon invest £8 billion (about $10.45 billion) over the next five years to build and expand data centers within the U.K. through its cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS). This investment is part of AWS’s strategy to enhance its cloud computing capabilities in the country.
The statement was made early on Wednesday, London time. This investment is sizable as businesses become increasingly interested in and want to combine generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their operations.

Amazon Invest £8 Billion Tanuja Randery, the management director for AWS in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, mentioned in an interview with CNBC that British companies have had a robust hobby in cloud computing and AI. She highlighted that the U.K. has a bold digital approach. The funding will help AWS support its customers by supplying the necessary data centres for cloud computing services.
Randery additionally mentioned that generative AI is one of the most transformative technologies, similar to the effects of the Internet and cloud computing. Businesses are exploring using this generation to enhance revenue, employee productivity, and international competitiveness.
AWS and major cloud corporations, including Microsoft and Google, have invested closely in infrastructure, such as facts centres and Nvidia chips, to develop and feature in AI models. These investments allow AWS to offer AI offerings to companies.
This new investment comes amid improved scrutiny from U.K. Regulators, who are analyzing opposition within the cloud market. AWS and Microsoft are being researched through the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Randery stated that AWS is jogging cautiously with the CMA and believes that while the law is essential, it needs to help innovation as well.
