The unveiling of the new iPad Mini also sent a crucial message about aspirational improvement in Apple’s software with advanced AI advancements. True, such aspirations are there, but the journey so far, in terms of development, of Apple Intelligence has been nothing to pen home or pencil home, so to speak, but worse, by several standards as compared to other promising features of AI that are still in its developing age, disappointing tech enthusiasts.

Apple’s internal tests recently indicated that Siri cannot take the lead. According to information published in a Bloomberg report, ChatGPT answers questions 25% more accurately than Siri and gets answers to 30% more questions. Although Apple is improving Siri’s understanding of natural language by integrating more apps and local files, Siri still has limitations in those instances. For those instances where Siri finds it hard to answer, the question goes to ChatGPT as part of the collaboration between OpenAI and Apple.

This partnership will also boost Siri while helping in other “image and document understanding” activities. The new writing tools in applications such as Notes and Safari have already utilized ChatGPT’s capabilities, and image generation will also be based on the same.

This heavy reliance on OpenAI has led many to question the depth of Apple’s own AI technology. Some team members have reportedly told Apple that the company’s generative AI efforts are more than two years behind industry leaders, including Google’s Gemini and Meta. Apple’s rollout of AI capabilities has been slower compared to Samsung’s Galaxy AI and several Chinese smartphone brand generative AI features.

Apple has thrown together a rush-job AI strategy hastily. Now that it has muted most investors’ angst over being behind the AI curve, the innovations that have rolled out so far haven’t brought that much revolutionary change. The most impactful enhancements to date are notification summaries and prioritization. While these may add utility, they aren’t changing the game for users.

With continuous work in AI technology, it would be interesting to find out how the company is refreshing its approach this coming year. There have been no significant announcements thus far, and several promises made during this year’s developers conference have yet to be realized.
